Recommended Romance Reads and a Giveaway!

Who doesn't love to escape with a little bit of romance.   It's winter here in Australia and in my part of the country there hasn't been a great deal of snow but a lot of rain and hail - perfect weather for sitting indoors with a hot cup of coffee and warming myself up with hot (fictional) guys, beautiful and sunny surroundings and of course, a little bit of steam!

Here are some gorgeous stories that I really think you should check out!  Click on the titles to take you to the Amazon page for more information, and go to the end for your chance to win one of these great books.

Arielle Immortal Awakening

This is the first in the Immortal Rapture series by Lillian Roberts.  It been awhile since I read paranormal romance but this has definitely got me excited to start again.  is about a young girl who falls in love with a powerful Immortal guy, and of course there are those out to tear them apart.   I love the fact that this is set in the glorious South of France but the mystery and suspense surrounding this paranormal love story sounds amazing.

Tripped Up Love

This is the first novel in Julie Farley's The New Ever After Series and is a perfect introduction to new beginnings through the main character, Heather and how she deals with the idea of finding love again.  I read this one in almost one sitting - I only stopped for kids and dinner and stuff - the Adam Levine lookalike certainly helped - and I loved Heather and her family (the kids especially were so realistic it made me laugh out loud, when I wasn't busy being cranky at my own for making me put the book down).

Designing Samantha's Love

This book by PJ Fiala has me intrigued so I went to buy it only to realise I already had.   This is another book about new beginnings and new love and I was pleased to see that it involved a more mature couple with all the experience, baggage and character that goes with it.  This one also has the steamy scenes to warm you up on a cold, wet day.

Flirting With Magick

Of course it would be silly if I didn't recommend very own romance novel, Flirting with Magick where Abby does a little bit of a magick spell to try to get her love life in order which results in some wonderful and not so wonderful romance options.   If you haven't checked it out yet, I'd love it if you did.

Enter to win one of these wonderful titles!

My review

4.5 Stars

I really enjoyed this story, not least because I'm also careening towards the big four-oh,  a stay at home mother with boys of similar age, and am constantly questioning my role in life and family.    Grace was a relatable character, with a lot of inner conversation and it was nice to see she wasn't perfect.    The people in Grace's life and those she meets were familiar as everyday people, although I did feel as though I only got a glimpse into many of them.  No one was over the top or unrealistic.   It was easy to understand many of the challenges and decisions she had to make.    I felt like I was getting a peek into a neighbour or friend's personal life, behind closed doors.

I would definitely recommend this novel and look forward to reading Susie's next.

Summary

What happens when your high school nemesis becomes the shining star in a universe you pretty much saved? Book blogger Kimberly Long is about to find out. A chick lit enthusiast since the first time she read “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” Kim, with her blog, “Pastel is the New Black,” has worked tirelessly by night to keep the genre alive, and help squash the claim that “chick lit is dead” once and for all. Not bad for a woman who by day ekes out a meager living as a pretty, and pretty-much-nameless, legal secretary in a Manhattan law firm. While Kim’s day job holds no passion for her, the handsome (and shaving challenged) associate down the hall is another story. Yet another story is that Hannah Marshak, one of her most hated high school classmates, has now popped onto the chick lit scene with a hot new book that’s turning heads—and pages—a cross the land. It’s also popped into Kim’s inbox—for review. With their ten-year high school reunion drawing near, Kim’s coming close to combustion over the hype about Hannah’s book. And as everyone around her seems to be moving on and up, she begins to question whether being a “blogger girl” makes the grade in her off-line life.

Excerpt

I rolled off of Jonathan and onto my back. Since I was almost always on top when I slept with him, I wondered if all of his pot smoking made him incapable of doing the work. When we dated in high school, cheap beer, not weed, was his drug of choice.
“So what’s going on with you?” he asked, reaching over one of his lean arms to grab a cigarette from his midnight blue Ikea dresser.
I quickly got out of his bed. The smell of cigarettes made me sick. “When are you gonna quit smoking?”
“Hey, I don’t complain when you text me for a booty call so no complaining about the smoking.”
“Screwing me is not bad for your health!”
“That’s arguable,” Jonathan laughed as he scratched his unruly head of dark hair.
I swatted him with my pants before putting them back on. “Time for a haircut, Middleton!” Although I vaguely remembered being madly in lust with Jonathan when we were high school sweethearts from the ages of 16-18, we had been just friends for the past ten years. And friends with benefits off and on for the past two. I hadn’t dated anyone I liked in a while, was uncomfortable taking home strangers from bars and Jonathan was either too lazy or stoned to make the effort. We fell into bed occasionally out of convenience and, that night, out of mere sexual frustration on my part.
Still lying on the bed, one arm extended behind his head, Jonathan took a drag with his free hand. “How’s Black is the New Purple going these days?”
“Pastel is the New Black is going very well, thank you.” I chuckled. Jonathan never remembered the title of my blog but at least he always managed to ask about it.
“Did you hear about Hannah Marshak?” He sat up and tapped his cigarette into an ashtray.
“Ugh. What about her?” Hannah was bitch central in my high school class. Well, at least to me and Bridget. She had more personalities than Sally Field in the movie Sybil and some of our class probably thought she was cotton candy sweet.
“She wrote a book.”
I felt my face drain of color as I remembered Hannah suggesting in front of my entire 8th grade Home Economics class that I have an expert look at my Coach bag because the leather strap looked too dark to be authentic and she would feel so terrible if my mother had spent money on a fake. Hannah came off looking like a Good Samaritan while I looked like the poor little girl with the knock-off bag. I considered donating the bag to Goodwill but Bridget said that would be playing right into Hannah’s hands and talked me out of it. “She what?”
“She wrote a novel. Some crap about a chick in Paris.” Jonathan took another deep drag of his cigarette. “It’s being published.”
My throat burned as if I’d chain smoked a pack of Jonathan’s Marlboro Reds and I was afraid I was going to regurgitate prosecco all over his dirty wood floor. “I gotta go.”
“You all right?”  Even though the effects of weed had seemingly rendered Jonathan paralyzed in his relaxed position on the bed, I could hear a hint of emotion in his voice.
“I’m fine,” I lied. After squeezing my feet into my shoes, I walked around to Jonathan’s side of the bed and kissed his stubbly cheek. “As always, thanks for the good time.”
“You can leave the money on the counter.”
“Fuck you.”

Guest Post

At the opening of Blogger Girl, Kimberly Long is content with her life. Sure, her day job as a legal secretary is pretty uninspiring but her popular chick lit book blog, Pastel is the New Black affords her the opportunity to do what she enjoys more than almost anything else in the world – read and post her thoughts about the novels she loves and hates, and discuss books with likeminded people. Kim’s reviews are highly sought after and her opinion is very well respected. Blogging is the one area of Kim’s life where she feels completely in control and at peace. That is until Kim receives a request to review the debut novel of her high school nemesis, Hannah Marshak. In the ten years since Kim has graduated, she has moved on from the drama that transpired between the walls of her high school but Pastel is the New Black is Kim’s sanctuary and she doesn’t want it contaminated by Hannah Marshak.  Unfortunately, there is a constant buzz about Hannah’s book, Cut on the Bias, in social media and Kim is faced with a dilemma: To review the book or To NOT review the book – THAT is the question.  I know that when I am faced with a difficult decision, I often write a pro/con list. Since I embodied the soul of Kim while writing Blogger Girl, it stands to reason that she would write a pro/con list as well and she gave me permission to share it with you. (In all honesty, she didn’t really have a choice.)

Reasons to review Hannah’s Book
Reasons NOT to review Hannah’s book
Because I’m a book blogger and it’s what I do!
Because she’s a biatch!
Because Nicholas thinks I should and he’s smart and really freakin hot!
Because I want nothing to do with promoting her writing career.
Because if it sucks, I can piss all over it on Pastel is the New Black and knock her down a peg. Maybe even negatively affect her sales.
Because she thinks I will!
Because if it’s good and I can write a positive review about anything Hannah-related without throwing up in my mouth, I will know that I can accomplish almost anything!
Because my little sister Erin wants me to.
Because as much as I hate to admit it, I’m really curious about the book and want to know if Hannah has any writing ability whatsoever.
Because of that time she accused me of carrying a knock-off Coach bag in front of the entire class even though it was real!

Because of that time she told me how nice my hair looked all one length *conveniently* five minutes after eavesdropping on my conversation with Bridget telling her I was getting my bangs cut after school.

Because she suggested I audition to be a munchkin in the school’s performance of The Wizard of Oz.

Because Bridget would kill me.

Because she called me Kim Short all through junior high and high school.

Because I really don’t want to.

Review

5 stars

I really enjoyed Blogger Girl but had to laugh at the protagonist being a big boobed 4'11"  as I could completely relate, and yes, the short jokes do wear thin after awhile so it was nice to not have them all through the book, just enough to know how annoying they can be!

Kim Long (or Short if you're a Mean Girl)  has a job she enjoys but isn't passionate about so she spends much of her time on her chick lit review blog,  a genre she enjoys and feels she virtually kept alive.   She also has a burgeoning relationship with the office hottie which keeps her boring job a little more interesting.   She discovers that her high school nemesis has, oh my God, written a chick lit book and with the upcoming school reunion, she's not exactly sure how to handle it.

Besides the height thing that Kim and I have in common, she was such a relatable, ordinary girl with regular, loveable friends and relationships.  The story was funny, although some parts had me holding my breath.  The characters were real and didn't frustrate me with over the top antics, nor were any of them too perfect.    A couple of times I did wonder if the high school bully really could continue to be as nasty as she was but the subtlety was well explained  and, lets face it, unfortunately there are really people like that.

It was a perfect chick lit read that I couldn't put down.    I look forward to reading Meredith's other works.

Blog Tour - Thirty-Two Going on Spinster by Becky Monson (competition, interview, excerpt and review)

I had the pleasure of having Becky Monson join me on my blog today as part of her CLP Blog Tour for her wonderful chick lit novel, Thirty-Two Going On Spinster.    Please read on for her interview, excerpt and my review plus a chance to win.   Here is the Chick Lit Plus tour page.

 Interview

Tell me about your latest book:
My latest (and only book so far) is Thirty-Two Going on Spinster. It’s about Julia and the rut she is stuck in… and how she gets out of it.

What inspired you to write this story?
I came up with the story a long time ago. It evolved over time to what it finally became. But it started out with a work crush I had once. That was the beginning. I did love a good work crush when I was working in an office. It made work much more enjoyable!

Tell me a little about your Works in Progress:
I’m working on a sequel to Thirty-Two Going on Spinster, which will most likely be called Thirty-Three Going on Girlfriend… Very original of me, I realize. It’s the next book in the Spinster Series, more of Julia and Jared. I’m having fun with it! I’ve also got a bunch of ideas in the works – other chick lit ideas and a YA idea for a book that came from a dream I had (how very Stephenie Meyer of me, right?).

Do you have a favourite writing snack?
Chocolate. But that is my favorite snack for anything, really.

If a movie was made about your book, who would be in your ideal cast?
Oooh, good question! Here is my ideal cast:
Julia – Drew Barrymore (Julia needs to be someone who can look a bit frumpy when not made up, but then look totally adorable with some make-up and cute clothes).
Jared – Ryan Reynolds (yummy)
Brown – Kate Hudson
Anna - Leighton Meester

Do you have a character you’ve enjoyed writing the most?
I do love writing Julia. Of course, she is a little bit of me. She is sarcastic, and I am too. She can tend to be a bit of a pessimist. I’m not really that way now, but I think I was (at least in my head) when I was single and living in that world. I do not miss it! Okay, sometimes I miss it… a little.

What do you do for fun when you’re not writing?
I have lots of hobbies. Reading, photography, graphic design, crocheting, baking. I don’t get to do many things for myself these days as my babies are still, well, babies. So most of my time is spent being their mommy. But I do love it! Well… most days.

What sort of books do you like to read?
I love Chick Lit. I love that it, for the most part, will give me a happy ending. It can be predictable, and I don’t honestly care. I enjoy that it’s predictable actually. A good dystopian novel will really take me away, but those are incredibly unpredictable. So I definitely have to be in the mood for that.

Do you have any advice for people wanting to write their own book?
Just do it! But make sure you have a clear outline and detailed back stories for your characters. Once you have back-stories, they will come to life in your mind, and the dialogue will just come to you. Oh, and another thing – make sure you have a great eye-catching cover. People judge a book by its cover. Sad, but true. So make sure you have a good one. I’ve seen a lot of truly bad covers out there.

What parts of the writing process do you love and hate the most?
I love writing dialogues. I love it when the characters have conversations in my head. This was something I made fun of when I heard other authors talk about their characters as if they were real people. I totally get it now. I still think it’s crazy, but I get it. The part I dislike is writing the outline. But it’s a must for me. Some authors can just write – but I have to have it all outlined before I can start, or I feel as if I will miss out on something. Outlining is a long and arduous process for me, but a necessary one.

Do you have a favourite Chick Lit author?
I do love Sophie Kinsella. I think she is the queen of Chick lit, honestly. She just knows how to write the type of books I want to read. I love happy endings, and she always writes them.

Shoes or handbags, which is more your guilty pleasure?
Oh gosh… can my answer be both? I go back and forth, really. I will be totally into shoes for a while, and then I will get over that and move on to handbags. Then I will find a handbag that I adore and won’t want to keep looking so my focus will then move back to shoes. Sometimes, I am totally into both at the same time. That is when my hubby has had to intervene… darn him…

Chick Lit as a genre has apparently died a few times, which we know isn’t true.  How do you see the future of Chick Lit?
It’s funny you mention that because I had my book reviewed recently and the headline for her review said “The Reappearance of Chick Lit”, and I thought really? I didn’t know it ever went away! Chick Lit is what I prefer to read the most. I want something to escape with, something I can count on to have a happy ending. I know there are more of us Chick Lit Lovers out there! I think as a whole, the future of Chick Lit looks bright. With all of these new indie authors coming out, I think we will see more and more. I’m excited!

Do you have a signature lip colour?
I must admit, lip colour and I have had our ups and downs. I was totally into that bright red that was popular in the last few years. I bought some from MAC, and I wore it all the time. Then I saw a picture of myself. Yikes. So I’ve gone back to lip gloss. There is one called Diamonds and Pearls from TIGI and it’s the best stuff. I never get more compliments then when I wear it. I usually end up kissing it off on my babies cheeks though, so it doesn’t last long for me.

Ultimate chick lit love interest?(either from an existing novel or just your ideal)
I really loved Sam Roxton from Sophie Kinsella’s I’ve Got Your Number. There was something about him that I just found so attractive. And there is a scene in that book that is one of the most romantic scenes I have ever read. One of my favorite books, for sure.

Thirty-Two Going On Spinster

 Summary:

Julia Dorning is in a rut. She has lived in her parent's basement for ten years, been at the same mundane boring job for ten years and she has no self confidence.
When handsome hunky Jared Moody is hired in HR at her company, her life begins to change in ways she never saw coming. Is Jared the catapult to get her moving again?

Author Bio:

By day, Becky Monson is a mother to three young children, and a wife. By night, she escapes with reading books and writing. In her debut novel, Becky uses humor and true-life experiences to bring her characters to life. She loves all things chick-lit (movies, books, etc.), and wishes she had a British accent. She has recently given up Diet Coke for the fiftieth time and is hopeful this time will last... but it probably won't.

 Excerpt

“I feel that, as a friend, I need to tell you something,” Brown says to me as we go outside to the smoking area.  It’s near the end of the day and Mr. Nguyen had a meeting, so I figured I could take a little break.
“What is it?” I say, not truly caring. I am still annoyed with her. I want to say something, but there is no point. She wouldn’t care anyway.
“Friends do not let friends go around with that,” she says pointing to my upper lip.
“What do you mean? Is there something on my lip?” I say, walking over to the door to see if I can see my reflection in the glass. I can’t see anything.
“Yes, there is something on your upper lip… hair.”
Whaaaaaaaaat? “Are you serious? I have a moustache?” My hand immediately goes up to my mouth, covering it and my upper lip. “But…. I….. how bad?” Somehow this is very fitting. A spinster with a moustache.
“Look, it’s not bad.  And we do not call it a ‘moustache’, it’s referred to as ‘upper lip hair’,” says the perfectly-put-together prom queen. “You have sort of… always had one.  But it was always blonde hair, so I never said anything.  But now, all of the sudden, there are brown hairs as well as the blonde.”
I guess right now would be a good time to die. I mean, I recently had a conversation with a good-looking man and this hasn’t happened in, well, over a decade. And I realize it wasn’t a real conversation since I couldn’t say more than three word sentences. But he was talking to me up-close and - oh my gosh, he could have seen it.  Of course he did because that is how my life goes. I am a under-a-conference-table-hiding-deaf-mute-possibly-slow-spinster… with a moustache. Next comes sagging boobs and trailer parks.

This book was very Sophie Kinsella in style but also had a Bridget Jones feel which started from the definition of spinster and developed into a continuously funny and entertaining story with a few awkward and endearing moments thrown in.    Julia, the main character was likeable and easy to relate to, as well as being a character you could really barrack for, especially with the entry of new office hottie, Jared.    A highly recommended, light, easy chick lit read.

Blog Tour: Is This All There Is? by Patricia Mann (Guest Post, Interview, Excerpt and Review)

Every time I read the title of this book I start singing in my head the 'Is that all there is.."  part of Shut Up by The Black Eyed Peas.    While that was annoying, I loved this book and as a wife and mother, I found it  scarily relatable.

Patricia Mann is a lovely new Facebook friend and is the best retweeter around (Thanks so much for the retweets Patricia).   I jumped on the opportunity to review her book and learn more about her.   So today Patricia has written a fun guest post, answered my questions and I'm sharing my thoughts on Is this All There Is, and an excerpt.

Guest Post

Thanks for hosting me as a guest blogger, Leigh! I know we share a love for blogging about our families, so I thought I’d try something new. With just my sixteen-year-old son and me at home on a lazy summer day, interviewing him seemed like a fun idea. It turns out that our talk was quite revealing – about both him and me! I changed my son’s name to protect his anonymity, using Sam instead, the character in my book who’s loosely based on him at a much younger age.
Patricia: What do you think my book is about?
Sam: I think it’s about a bored woman who has sex with a student, or ex-student or whatever, because her husband is distant and working.
Patricia: What do you like about having me as your mom?
Sam: You’re nice and you’re not unreasonable or crazy.
Patricia: What do you not like about having me as your mom?
Sam: You’re overprotective a lot of the time. You don’t really let me go to parties.
Patricia: What’s good about being sixteen?
Sam: I have a car and I have freedom without any real responsibility.
Patricia: What’s not good about being sixteen?
Sam: You guys own all my stuff, so you pretty much own me.
Patricia: What do you like and not like about having a little brother?
Sam: He annoys me a lot of the time but when I get really bored, he can be entertaining.
Patricia: What kind of grandmother do you think I’ll be?
Sam: I think you’ll be a cool grandma, at least when they’re younger, probably not as relaxed as my grandparents (Patricia’s parents). But when they’re younger and all it takes to be the cool one is to give them candy, I’m sure you’ll be the cool one.
Patricia: Why are you so obsessed with your fish tank?
Sam: Because it’s a fun hobby and it’s peaceful and the fish don’t tell me to do stuff.
Patricia: What are your plans right now?
Sam: I’m going to eat, then go to the chiropractor, then go to the store, and then pick up my little brother from camp.
Patricia: What do I do that embarrasses you?
Sam: When I have friends over, you like to spy on us and see what we’re doing.
Patricia: What’s the most embarrassing thing your dad does?
Sam: Dad doesn’t really do anything that embarrassing. He makes weird inappropriate jokes sometimes with my friends but most of my friends think he’s pretty awesome.
Patricia: You seem to be our dog’s favorite person, why do you think he loves you so much?
Sam: Because I feed him every once in a while and I let him sleep in my bed.
Patricia: What kind of friends do you like to hang out with?
Sam: People who don’t borrow money and never pay you back.
Patricia: Give me an example of the teenage drama you see.
Sam: Recently, this girl I know had a party and she checked with all her neighbors to make sure they were okay with it because there was gonna be loud music and they all said yes. Then she had the party and the cops showed up and her parents almost had to pay a $1,500.00 ticket because there was drinking and stuff.
Interruption by Patricia: Wait, you weren’t at that party, were you?
Sam: No, I wouldn’t have even bothered to ask because it would have been an automatic no. Then I found out later who called the cops and it was another kid our age who dislikes the girl who threw the party. So I told her that he was the one who called the cops and she got really mad at him.
Patricia: You have a very adventurous, risk-taking personality. For example, you insisted on making the 108-story leap off the top of the Stratosphere in Vegas, which nearly gave me a heart attack. Why do you think you have no fear?
Sam: Because I’m sixteen and those things are fun and I can’t fully understand the consequences of my decisions right now because my brain isn’t fully formed yet.
Patricia: What other risky activities do you plan to engage in when you’re older?
Sam: Definitely sky diving - I think the day I turn 18.
Patricia: What do you want to be when you grow up?
Sam: A writer, a doctor, or a film editor.
Patricia: Is there anything you’d like to add?
Sam: I would like to have it shown on the record that whatever you’re reading is a censored version of what I actually said.

(My boys aren't teenagers yet, so I must admit this interview freaked me out a bit -  particularly the leaping stuff, and I agree about the parties. - LB)

Interview

Tell me about your latest book

Beth, the main character in Is This All There Is?, appears to have it all. Her husband is reliable, she has two adorable kids, and enjoys her a part-time teaching job at the local university. But something isn’t quite right, otherwise how could she allow herself to be drawn into an affair with a sweet, sexy, young former student who showers her with attention? Torn between her loyalty to one man and her lust for another, Beth must make a choice.

What inspired you to write this story?

When I started writing it, I wanted to explore the challenges of being an overwhelmed working wife and mother trying to find balance. That subject interested me more than any other because it was the story of my life! As the book took shape, Beth developed a mind of her own. It was her idea to have an affair with a student. I had to admit, it is one of the many unhealthy forms of escape I’ve seen women fall prey to. So I went with it.

Tell me a little about your Work in Progress

I’m so excited about the book I’m currently working on. My co-author is my mother. She’s preparing to retire from over 30 years of stellar work as a nurse, mostly in critical care. So our book is set in a hospital and each chapter will be packed with medical drama from the heartbreaking to the miraculous and everything in between, based on true stories. Our protagonist is a nurse who’s involved in a steamy secret romance with a hot ER doctor, but he doesn’t seem as ready for a commitment she is. So we’ll see where that goes.

Do you have a character you’ve enjoyed writing the most?

I’m tempted to say I enjoyed writing Beth’s character the most, because she’s like me in many ways, though not all. But trying to get into the heads of characters very different from me has been an exciting challenge. I had fun writing from the point of view of Beth’s seven-year-old son, Sam. When I was originally writing those parts, my older son was about that age so I would draw from the funny or challenging things he said. Many of his lines are taken straight out of my son’s mouth – but don’t let him know that, please, he’s a teenager now!

What sort of books do you like to read?

I love spiritual books that help me to be a better person, such as A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle. I also adore chicklit written by authors who are dear friends like Samantha Stroh Bailey, Shelly Hickman, and Lori Verni-Fogarsi.

Chick Lit as a genre has apparently died a few times, which we know isn’t true.  How do you see the future of Chick Lit?

I get frustrated when I hear that because it doesn’t make any sense to me. There are so many definitions of chick lit. I see it as anything from funny to serious stories by women, about women, for women, involving the feelings and experiences women share. What could be wrong with that and how could something like that ever die?

Ultimate chick lit love interest? (either from an existing novel or just your ideal)

Realistic: Sam from Shelly Hickman’s beautiful and moving novel, Somewhere Between Black and White. He’s smart, sexy, compassionate, and wise. And I love that he’s a teacher like me!

Fantasy: Will from Renee Carlino’s awesome hit, Sweet Thing. A true rock star in the making, he’s incredibly hot and charismatic, yet he has this irresistible vulnerable, genuine side. Dangerous, but I’d go for it if I had the chance (and weren’t happily married!).

Bio

Patricia Mann is a university professor. She lives in California with her husband, their two kids, and a sweet, silly old dog.

Beth Thomas has the perfect life.  At thirty-five, she’s married to her college sweetheart, has two adorable kids, and teaches part time at the local university.  But when a friend persuades Beth to go dancing on a rare night out, a chance meeting with twenty one year old Dave, one of her former students, changes the course of her life.  Loud music, too much to drink, and the thrill of feeling young again lead to an unforgettable kiss that was never supposed to happen.  As she tries to put the memory behind her, Dave’s pursuit leaves Beth torn between what her mind says is right and what her heart and body crave.

Excerpt

I got home a little after seven thirty, later than usual because I had pulled over to extend my phone call, but no one seemed to notice. Rick and the kids were sprawled out on the couch with the TV blaring.
“Can you turn that thing down please?” Rick grabbed the remote and lowered the volume.
I stepped over the winding wood train tracks that covered most of the living room floor and collapsed on the couch between the boys and gave them each a kiss on the forehead. Rick nudged Sam aside and sat next to me.
“How was class?” Oh God, he knows, he can smell it on me. He knows I was kissing another man.
            “It was fine.”
“Really, what was the subject?” I gave him a suspicious look.
“I’m interested, really, you never talk about what you teach.”
Sam noticed that Mommy and Daddy were going to talk about something they don’t usually talk about, which in his mind is always an invitation to join in.
“Yeah, Mom, tell us what you were teaching about tonight.”
Jack looked exhausted. I lifted him into my lap and ran my fingers along his back and arms. His sweet baby smell made me pause and inhale deeply for more. His little eyes fluttered and I wanted to lay my head down and drift off with him but I could see that Sam and Rick were waiting for my response.
“Okay, well, you know the class I was teaching tonight is a business communication class, right?” They both nodded with enthusiasm although I was sure neither of them actually knew that.
“So tonight, we talked about teamwork. It’s just like on your soccer team, Sammy. When people work together, they have to treat each other nicely, and take turns, and make sure they have common goals.”
“So you mean you taught the college kids about soccer? Well duh, I could teach that class.”
“No, it wasn’t about soccer, it was about teamwork, you know, taking other people into account when you make decisions rather than just thinking about yourself.” A sharp pain shot across the small of my back.

Review

4.5 Stars :)

I really enjoyed this book.  The parts about mothering, feeling insecure and if there was more to life were spot on  and I could really relate to Beth, and her dissatisfaction was well written.

I liked both the guys but have to admit I was team Rick, although he was frustrating at times so could understand Beth's annoyance.   I did like Dave but he seemed so intense and love struck that I found I wondered about his sincerity, but then the vast difference between how he and Rick both were towards Beth made it very easy to understand her actions and motivations and it all led to a very satisfying and realistic ending.

Searching for The One

(The Practice of Love)

So many of us are searching for the One. We all want love. Then, when we get it, many of us become afraid and start to run in the opposite direction. On the one hand, we are searching for love, searching for some lasting relationship.  On the other hand, we often do many things to push the person away.

It always "seems" as if relationships are difficult. They are difficult to find, difficult to keep and difficult to enjoy. Yet, the basic reality is that there is never a scarcity of relationships -there is never a scarcity of love.  Love doesn’t come from the outside, it comes with within. It is up to us open our hearts and let the love flow. Love is our natural condition. Why aren't we in it all the time? What is it that keeps us from this love we are so hungry for?

The most common answer to this question is that before we will allow ourselves to love, first we must find, the perfect person.  Most people don’t pass our test and we tell ourselves that is the reason why we are alone. But the truth is, we won’t let love happen.  We find something wrong with everyone we meet.

Sitting around waiting for the perfect person can be a real trap. Take a moment to see clearly who this perfect person is to you? Write a description of how you would imagine your perfect partner to be. Then, take a moment to see how you would have to be in order to have such a partner?

It’s possible that you might think – what can this perfect person possibly see in me? How can I hold him? How painful it will be when I’m rejected.  Before we find the One, we have to really like and respect ourselves. We have to become our own best friend.

Otherwise, it is easy to want this person to be someone who will build up our own self-image., make us feel good about ourselves. Without this person we might feel as if we don’t count, or that our life isn’t full enough. But, when we use another person to build up our self-image, this kind of relationship is never stable, it is always grounded in doubt and fear of loss.

Love has nothing to do with any images of fantasies of how somebody else should be – or how you should be either. Love is accepting yourself and another exactly as they are. And, love is never about using another to feel better about yourself.  If that’s what you’re doing it isn’t love.

Love is a practice.  First we have to start with ourselves. We need to build our love muscles daily, see the best in others, (and ourself), learn to truly listen, stop judging a book by its cover, become patient, learn how to give.

Here’s a huge secret I’ve discovered. Happiness doesn’t necessarily come from being loved, it comes from being loving.  The first step in Searching for the One is searching for your own loving heart. Even though you may not know it, all the loving you are seeking from others is waiting right there for you within.

The perfect person for you to practice being loving with is always the one who is beside you right now. Each person you meet is giving you a chance to become stronger, kinder, more positive and feel better about yourself.  The more you are willing to do this practice, the more of a love magnet you will become, and the sooner you will inevitably draw the one who is right for you.

The practice of love includes many exercises, steppingstones and practices.  Here is an exercise to begin your practice of love right away.  Try it and enjoy:

Look around for a moment. Who is there? Really look at this person. Are you willing to see the best in them? Are you willing to accept who they are? When you do, you are loving them. Are you willing to allow them to love you, too?

Some have a hard time accepting love, don’t feel they deserve it. If that is you, just become aware of it. As you love others more, you’ll feel better about allowing them to love you, too.

Now, look around at whoever else is in your life. Make a list of the people. Imagine yourself loving each one of them. One at a time. Then imagine them loving you, too. What does it feel like? Practice this when you are alone, and when you see them as well.

(In this exercise love doesn’t necessarily mean romantic love)

If you can’t imagine feeling loving towards someone, write down, why not? What has to change about them for you to love them? What has to change about you?

There is a wonderful saying that anything we can’t accept in another, is something we can’t accept in ourselves. Try accepting yourself fully now. Try accepting others. Congratulations, you’re on the royal road to love.

“Love is wanting for the other what they want for themselves

Even if you aren’t the one able to give it to them.”

 Excerpt

CHAPTER 1

The late April evening was quickly growing cool as breezes blew up from the ocean tossing Ashley’s long, blonde, hair onto her face.  Ashley’s wavy hair was one of her best features and she’d always been proud of it.  She pushed it back onto her neck now as she and Brad walked along the promenade, barely looking at each other or talking.  Ashley didn’t know if the chill she was feeling was from the wind or the distance that seemed to have suddenly grown between them.  It was inexplicable. Their first three dates had gone wonderfully. And now this.  It was becoming a pattern for her.
Things would start out great in her relationships, but very soon on into dating, the excitement petered out, and things turned sour. Ashley had no idea why, but the pattern had become more intense these past few months.  It happened more quickly, and left her feeling more and more shaky about herself.
Ashley was slim and beautiful with a lithe figure and never had any trouble attracting guys her whole life long.  She came from a fine family, had a job she loved and a beautiful apartment in Santa Monica, with a patio overlooking the hills.  All these years she’d enjoyed her freedom, built her career as a graphic designer, met new friends, roller bladed, ran in marathons, sketched on the beach.  But now, her thirtieth birthday was fast approaching and it was time for her to settle down.  She knew it and so did everyone else. By now most of her friends were married or engaged. It seemed as if the whole world had someone, except her.
As she and Brad walked along in silence, Ashley let out a long sigh, and Brad turned his head and looked over at her.
“Something the matter?” he asked almost gruffly.
“It turned so cold so fast,” Ashley murmured under her breath, just loud enough for him to hear.
Brad ran his hands through his dark brown hair and looked away.
“Is something wrong, Brad?” Ashley managed to ask, as the wind grew stronger around them.
He stopped, turned away and looked at the ocean, where the waves rolled in and out oblivious to what was going on at the shore.  Ashley and Brad had met through work, at one of her company’s trade shows that she’d done the designs for. They’d started out on a high note, enjoying each other’s company, having a lot to talk about, knowing many people in common. Ashley told her friends she was excited about him, and they couldn’t wait to hear what happened next.
Ashley’s friends and family sat at the edge of their seats, waiting to hear good news from her. They called regularly to get the details of her latest dates and cheered her on relentlessly. In the beginning Ashley liked it, but now she did not. It was upsetting to have to answer to everyone and hear the long silences on the other end of the phone when things fell flat. It was becoming a ritual, and now it had happened again. Brad had suddenly become withdrawn. Had she done something to cause it? Ashley had no idea. As the evening was coming to an end, he actually seemed sullen and reserved.
Ashley took a step closer to him and then stopped cold.  She wasn’t into chasing - not him or anyone.
“I’m sorry,” Brad managed to finally say, “I can’t do this anymore. “
“Can’t do what?” Ashley didn’t understand.
“I’ve met someone,” Brad spoke very fast. “She’s a terrific woman, perfect for me, everything I’ve been looking for. It’s not fair to lead you on this way.”
Ashley felt a chill run up through her arms and shoulders.  He was breaking up with her? Right now, right here?   It didn’t make sense that everything had been great between them yesterday and now he’d suddenly met someone.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner,” Ashley said, in a cool, even tone, desperately trying to regain her dignity.
It wasn’t that she was in love with Brad. It was way too soon for that.  Ashley wasn’t the kind to jump into things quickly, to give her heart without being careful and taking time.  But to be broken up without seeing it coming, to be rejected on the turn of a dime. Why? It didn’t make sense.
“Can’t you be happy for me, Ashley?” Brad said falteringly.
Ashley knew that she should be happy for Brad, but she wasn’t. She felt rotten and let down.  Wasn’t she terrific too? What was wrong with her? Why wasn’t she the one he could see building a life with?  Why had the tide turned this way in her life, especially now with tomorrow being her thirtieth birthday, which only made matters worse.
“Come on,” Brad continued, trying to make light of it, “it’s not exactly a tragedy, we’ve only gone out a few times. Be happy for me!”
“Of course it’s not a tragedy and I wish I could be happy,” said Ashley lightly, as she turned away from him, and walked to the edge of the promenade to watch the sun set in the darkening sky.

Review

4 Stars

I really enjoyed this fun, lighthearted story.     Ashley is a woman unlucky in love and feels a bit left out when she turns thirty, her friends are in long term relationships, and her last big love was ten years ago.

Her best friend and yoga instructor, Ray, convinces her to go along with him to a workshop which leads her to employ the 'live as though you already have it' method, and with Ray's encouragement, she begins to plan a wedding to draw the man of her dreams into her life.

I'm fairly familiar with visualisation techniques to live your dreams so I enjoyed watching it pan out in the story.    Ashley's friends and family discover her going through the motions of planning the wedding and while Ashley can't tell them the real reasons, it gets quite awkward when they all want to meet the groom.     I couldn't put it down as I was wondering how it was all going to work out, which of her suitors might come to task or if she would finally admit to everyone what was really going on.   A fun and thoroughly enjoyable read.

Have you ever felt a hunger so intense it blinds you from everything else in your life?
For Claire Moore, her hunger for justice is her coping mechanism, her reason for getting out of bed each morning, struggling to face her day to day life alone after her father and brother were violently taken from her.
Other nineteen year olds are at parties and studying at University, living the fun naïve life of a teenager, but in the world of Claire, there was nothing left for her other than the desperate hunger for justice.
Unfortunately it’s this hunger that’s driven everyone who cares for her away, unable to watch her place herself in danger any longer and that includes her teenage love, Talon Baker.
But true love never really dies and after stumbling upon information to the identity of their murderers, together Talon and Claire are hunted until they can figure out the clues her father left for them.
Through her hunger for justice, Claire grows by relinquishing control of her fight and allowing others to love her, even though the fear of losing them is too excruciating bear.

HEART FOR JUSTICE-
SECOND NOVEL IN THE MOORE JUSTICE TRILOGY

A lot’s happened since Claire’s world turned upside down. No longer alone and now an enrolee in the NSW Police Academy, things are finally turning around. BLOOD FOR JUSTICE

Her future runs in the blood of others.

It’s a given that all families have skeletons in their closet, but Claire didn’t think the old proverb held any relevance in her life. Until the day she found out her mother hadn’t died in a car accident over sixteen years ago.
As if that wasn’t enough to wrap her head around, she also discovers she has sixteen year old twin brothers and a six year old sister and suddenly becomes a twenty year old mother overnight.
Her life had been filled with the pursuit for answers and justice, yet all that will have to wait when Claire and Talon are forced to deal with teachers, psychologists and community services on top of the day to day chores of parenthood with the lingering danger of the Volkovs who lurk ever close behind—waiting for a chance to strike.
Will Claire risk her family’s lives over her quest for justice? Or will her greatest fight yet, be the one to keep her new family together?
Can Talon and Claire’s love survive the pressure of a readymade, slightly dysfunctional family? Or will this finally be the thing that tears them apart?

My Review

Now that you know what the books are about, here are my thoughts.

I really enjoyed these books.  They were different to your usual YA romance. Claire and Talon were both very likable characters and you would find yourself just barracking for their happiness.
The books are fast paced and I swear I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, while there were so many WTF moments - in a good way!   I enjoyed how the romance was cleverly weaved through so it was a huge part of the books, hence the tagline above, but didn't detract from the suspense and wasn't shoved in for the sake of having romance in what is otherwise an action packed, mystery trilogy.    A thoroughly enjoyable story about love against the odds and love for family.

4.5 stars.

Blog Tour! Nina D'Angelo - Nowhere to Run

I am proud to be a part of Nina D'Angelo's Blog Tour for her debut novel, Nowhere To Run.

Nina recently joined me for an interview.  Check it and my review out below.

 Buy Now: http://www.amazon.com/Nowhere-Run-Stephanie-Carovella-ebook/dp/B00BDRVGY8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1360462517&sr=8-1&keywords=nowhere+to+run++nina+d%27angelo

A dominatrix is murdered; her body displayed in a show of dominance. An actress is found dead beneath the Hollywood sign. There’s a murderer roaming the streets of Los Angeles and he’s having far too much fun to stop.
Stephanie Carovella is a woman of fire and ice. She left her career, her friends and her home town of LA but she couldn’t outrun the demons of her past. When she is lured back by the death of her best friend she enters a world where no one’s safe.
Can Stephanie find her friend’s killer or will she discover that she has nowhere to run?

Review

Right from the very first word Nowhere to Run is an absolute roller coaster ride!

Stephanie Carovella is an intriguing character.  At first you're not sure whether to love or hate her but as you learn more about her, you understand her more, understand why she does what she does and find yourself definitely on her side, and most likely to react the same way she had if it was you.   She's incredibly loyal and does everything she can to protect those she loves - and those characters are just as engaging.

The women in the story are all gutsy, but all have a soft side.   The guys, well they are hot - the sort of guys you wished you could hang out with but  are sensitive as much as they are strong and  assertive.   Each character has their own little quirks, enough to make them loveable but not flawless.  The villains in the story were suitably hateable, but still with personalities that were well rounded enough to make you understand them, and at times feel sorry for them.

The storyline is fast paced, suspenseful and keeps you guessing.  I thought I had guessed who the serial killer was a number of times and was still surprised at the end.  The killer was interesting in the way they acted, killed and in their motivation.

All in all a wonderful debut novel and first of what I think is going to be an amazing series.

5 Stars.

Interview

Tell me about your latest book:
Nowhere to Run is my debut novel. It’s a story about obsession, passionate love, loss and murder. My main character, Stephanie Carovella, walked away from her life in Los Angeles – determined to put her past behind her. When her best friend is murdered, she returns – determine to find out who killed her and why. Her return to Los Angeles triggers a spate of murders, in which she is the common denominator.
Before long, Stephanie is drawn into a cat and mouse game, in which she must trap a killer before he claims her as his own.
What inspired you to write this story?
I never planned on writing a crime novel. If anyone told me when I was 16, I’d become a novelist I would have say yeah, I agree with that. If they’d told me that I’d write crime, I would have laughed my ass off.
I actually started writing Nowhere to Run by accident. I was playing around with storylines one Saturday night and nothing seemed to be working so I deleted everything I’d written and just cleared my mind and started writing. Before I knew it, I had written a prologue and then a few chapters –you get the gist.
The ideas for the novel just started to flowing after this. Everything just fell into place. I knew exactly what I wanted from the novel and I knew how I wanted it to flow.
Tell me a little about your Works in Progress:
I actually have three in progress. Two are on the backburner, because I can’t juggle three books at once. The main focus right now is Nowhere to Hide, which is book two in the Stephanie Carovella series. This book will see the return of all the central characters from book one, as well as the introduction of a minor character from Nowhere to Run. It will see Stephanie returning to University, studying to become a forensic profiler.

Life’s never really dull for Stephanie. In between trying to sort out her relationship woes, she will also be dealing with a copycat killer, who has learned from the best of them. And naturally, it won’t be long before he has her in his sights. In the background, there will be another killer watching and waiting – someone who wants to claim her as his own.
Once Nowhere to Hide is finished (I have it slated for an August release) then I will be working on The Live and Let Die/A Million to one series, which is a spin-off series of the Stephanie Carovella in the sense that it will feature some of the characters from the Stephanie Carovella series.
I also have a supernatural trilogy series in the works, but I am trying to hold that off.
For any new readers who would like to read your work, please tell me a little about your past books.  (could be beneficial if you have a series or if people might be interested in reading your earlier work)
Nowhere to Run is my debut novel. It’s part of a series though called the Stephanie Carovella series. I have about 15 novels so far planned for this series and about seven planned for the Live and Let Die/A million to one series.

I actually did write Live and Let Die/A Million to one before Nowhere to Run but it needs to be retweaked, reworked and rewritten.
Do you have a favourite writing snack?
I’m not really a fan of eating while I write. In fact, I’m renown for forgetting to eat. But I live on coffee. It fuels me. As long as I have coffee and good music, I’m set.
If a movie was made about your book, who would be in your ideal cast?
You know I’ve been thinking about this lately and it’s already been determined that Chris Pine would have to be Jase Devlin.
I haven’t worked out the rest of the characters yet, but stay tuned.
Do you have a character you’ve enjoyed writing the most?
As I write, it changes but Jake Carlisle has definitely become a favourite for a number of reasons. He’s sexy as hell, protective and just fun to write. He’s an Alpha male and you know he’s not going to take shit from his woman, no matter how tough she thinks she is. But he also doesn’t want a shy wallflower either. He wants someone who will stand up to him. Someone, who is not afraid to get their hands dirty and fight for what is hers.
He’s the hero type.
What do you do for fun when you’re not writing?
I love to read. I could curl up with a book anywhere and just chill out to relax. If I’m not reading, I’m researching for novels or thinking about ideas. I tend to be very tuned into writing. Writing to me is fun.

But I also love to travel. I’ve been all over the world and I usually do something crazy while I’m travelling. The last time I was overseas, I jumped out of a helicopter, and went paragliding off the Austrian Alps.
I also am a huge fan of photography and love taking photos. My photography has appeared in magazines.
What sort of books do you like to read?
Honestly? Anything and everything!!! I read romance. I read YA. I read crime. If someone hands me a book and it sounds interesting, I’ll read it. I also love biographies. I’m currently reading anything by Kristen Ashley, who is the Queen of Alpha Males and strong-headed women.
Do you have any advice for people wanting to write their own book?
Start writing and never stop. Write every day. It doesn’t have to be your novel. It can be a blog entry, a journey entry – anything – but keep writing. I try and write at least 1000 words a day. Even if it’s random.
And read. Read widely and read everything you can get your hands on. Reading helps widen your horizons. It lets you know what’s out there and it tightens your writing.
Also join writing groups. Once I started joining writing groups, my whole world changed. Other writers are the best people in the world to connect with. They get you. They’ve been where you are, they’re on the same journey and you will get a mountain of advice from them.
And lastly, believe in yourself. If you think you have a novel in you, then try. What do you have to lose? Nothing. If you don’t try, then you will never know.
What parts of the writing process do you love and hate the most?
I don’t think there’s a process of writing I actually hate. I love researching for my novel. I’m currently knee-deep is serial killers my copycat killer can imitate. It’s fascinating. Some of it’s sickening, but the research is necessary to ensure my details are accurate.
I love the writing, obviously. To me, that’s the best part of it. Putting my headphones on and tuning out to the rest of the world. It’s what I was born to do.
Like I said, there’s no real process I hate. Hell, I even love editing. That comes from the fact I’m a perfectionist. I tweak and retweak constantly until the novel is perfect.
If I had to say something I hated, it would be the assumptions people have about writing. People who aren’t in the writing industry often don’t know how much work goes into it. Writing a novel is about rewrites, promotion and marketing, edits, cover designs, formatting and managing time to make everything perfect.
